Indonesia is facing a growing waste management crisis as landfill sites across the country reach critical limits. The situation worsened after a deadly landslide at the Bantar Gebang landfill, which claimed lives and forced partial closure of the facility. As a result, garbage quickly piled up across Jakarta, with thousands of tonnes of waste accumulating in public areas, disrupting daily life and raising health concerns.
For decades, Indonesia has relied heavily on landfills like Bantar Gebang, which now holds more than 80 million tonnes of waste—far exceeding its intended capacity. Massive “trash mountains” have formed, highlighting the long-standing failure of centralized waste management systems. Authorities warn that without urgent action, most landfills nationwide could reach full capacity within the next few years.
In response, the government has launched large-scale waste-to-energy projects across multiple cities. However, these initiatives have faced criticism due to environmental concerns, including air pollution and improper waste segregation. Communities living near such facilities have reported foul odors and declining air quality, raising questions about their long-term sustainability.
Despite these challenges, several grassroots initiatives are offering hope. Local communities in regions like island settlements and rural villages have successfully reduced waste through sorting, recycling, and composting. These models demonstrate that sustainable waste management is achievable with public participation, awareness, and decentralized solutions. Experts emphasize that reducing waste at the source remains the most effective path forward for Indonesia’s environmental future.
