4.9 Earthquake Shakes Indio Region in California, Aftershocks Felt

4.9 Earthquake Shakes Indio Region in California, Aftershocks Felt

Post by : Meena Ariff

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck the Indio region of Southern California on Monday evening, causing noticeable shaking across a wide area. The epicentre was located about 19 kilometres from Indio, and the quake occurred at a shallow depth of around 3 kilometres, making the tremors more strongly felt.

The earthquake occurred at 1:56 UTC on Tuesday, which was Monday evening local time in California. Due to its shallow depth, residents across Riverside County and nearby areas clearly felt the shaking, even though the magnitude was moderate.

People in locations including Indio Hills, San Jacinto, and Borrego Springs reported sudden jolts and rolling movements. Some residents said they received emergency shake alerts moments before the tremors began.

Following the main quake, several aftershocks were recorded in the same area, with magnitudes of 3.3, 3.4, and 2.9. Such aftershocks are common as the ground adjusts after the initial movement. None caused further concern.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries, deaths, or property damage were reported. Emergency services remained on alert, but no major incidents were linked to the earthquake, and no warnings were issued afterward.

On the same day, a stronger magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, resulting in at least one death and damage to dozens of mud-brick houses. The tremors triggered landslides, blocking roads in mountainous areas.

Local officials said rescue teams were assessing damage, and information on casualties was still being collected.

While the California earthquake caused no destruction, both events highlight the ongoing risks of seismic activity and the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone regions.
