A 35-year-old man allegedly drove his car into pedestrians and cyclists on the French Atlantic island of Oléron on Wednesday, leaving 10 people injured, four of them in serious condition, authorities said. The collision took place on the main road linking Dolus d'Oléron and Saint-Pierre d'Oléron, a scenic route frequented by tourists.
Police say the suspect, a local resident of Oléron, reportedly shouted the Arabic phrase "God is the greatest" when detained — a phrase sometimes cited in Islamist-motivated incidents. He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder while investigators seek to clarify his intentions.
Officials have indicated the vehicle was used to target multiple people over several kilometres. Emergency services transported the injured to nearby hospitals as officers secured the scene and opened a full investigation.
Local leaders described the episode as deeply upsetting for the island community. Authorities have stressed the inquiry is ongoing as they gather evidence, assess any remaining risks and work to reassure residents and visitors.
The incident underscores growing concern about deliberate vehicle attacks in public spaces and has prompted heightened vigilance and responses from law enforcement across France.
