In a lighthearted moment, actor Hrithik Roshan has addressed the lackluster performance of his much-anticipated action thriller, War 2, at the box office.
War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, was released on August 14, intentionally timed with the Independence Day weekend. It was part of the YRF Spy Universe, following blockbusters like Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, and Tiger 3. However, despite the high expectations, the film garnered mixed reviews and fell short of commercial success, earning ₹236.55 crore net in India and ₹364.35 crore globally, against an estimated ₹400 crore budget. Critics noted issues with lackluster writing and subpar VFX, affecting the audience's experience.
During a recent event in Dubai at the Coca-Cola Arena, Hrithik was introduced as a “global icon,” prompting loud applause from attendees. Showing his signature wit, he humorously remarked, “That’s very kind of you... You know, my film just bombed at the box office, so it feels very good to get all the love. Thank you.” His candid response earned him cheers from the audience, showcasing his relatable demeanor.
Previously, Hrithik took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes moments from the film. Reflecting on his role as Kabir, he expressed, “Playing Kabir was so much fun. I was relaxed and knew him so well. It was going to be easy. Finally, a movie I could do like so many others, just play the actor, do my job, and come home.” He lauded director Ayan Mukerji for his support and energy on set, which contributed to a positive filming experience.
On the unexpected reception of War 2, Hrithik noted that even though the shoot felt flawless, he questioned why it seemed “too easy…” He acknowledged that not every film needs to be a struggle, advising himself to “just relax.”
War 2 also featured notable performances from Kiara Advani and Ashutosh Rana. The film faced tough competition from Rajinikanth’s Coolie at the box office, further impacting the earnings. Despite the mixed critical and commercial feedback, Hrithik’s humorous and honest approach has resonated with fans, highlighting his graceful acceptance of setbacks.
