Karan Johar Reflects on the Impact of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Secret Wedding

Karan Johar Reflects on the Impact of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Secret Wedding

Post by : Saif Rahman

In a landmark moment eight years ago, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma and cricket champion Virat Kohli changed the narrative of Indian weddings. Their private ceremony in Italy in December 2017 was shrouded in secrecy until the very end, with no leaks, prior media buzz, or public teasers. When they finally revealed their wedding photos, it caught the entire nation off guard.

This wedding is now seen as a pivotal point in how Indian couples approach destination weddings and personal celebrations. During a conversation linked to a wedding wear label, filmmaker Karan Johar reminisced on the event, dubbing it a “covert operation” that transformed wedding traditions in India.

Karan explained that the Anushka-Virat union altered the “texture and DNA” of weddings, particularly destination events. He noted how the country was captivated by stunning wedding images, completely unaware that such a significant event had occurred. The mystique surrounding the wedding, along with the breathtaking location and the bride’s memorable entrance, garnered widespread admiration.

Celebrity wedding planner Devika Narain, who played a key role in the planning, shared that the wedding's significance lay beyond ostentation. It emphasized meticulous planning, control, and making personal choices. She pointed out that the couple demonstrated that weddings need not rely on age-old customs or societal expectations. As a result, other couples began to understand they could curate their celebrations based on genuine personal expression.

Prior to this event, many Indian couples felt compelled to adhere to familial traditions, accommodating large guest lists and orchestrating multiple lavish affairs. Anushka and Virat's intimate and private approach pushed back against these conventions, inspiring a fresh generation to prioritize meaningfulness over showmanship.

As time passed, numerous couples shifted towards more private celebrations with smaller guest lists and unique venues. Destination weddings became more personal, with individual style gaining precedence over tradition. Experts frequently cite this wedding as the moment that redefined the landscape.

After a four-year relationship, Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli tied the knot on December 11, 2017. Now, as parents to a daughter named Vamika and a son named Akaay, they have settled in London, seeking a more tranquil lifestyle away from the limelight for their children.

Their wedding, while brief in its duration, continues to influence Indian weddings even today. What began as a secret event in Italy symbolizes autonomy, personal choice, and contemporary love for couples throughout the nation.
