Three large vessels, including two oil supertankers and one liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, have taken an alternative route along Oman’s coastline to enter the Strait of Hormuz, signaling a potential shift in maritime navigation amid ongoing regional tensions.
The ships, all managed by Oman Ship Management Company, were tracked moving eastward while broadcasting Omani ownership. Their route differed from the commonly used northern passage near Iranian waters, instead hugging Oman’s southern coastline.
This development comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains heavily restricted due to ongoing geopolitical conflict. Iran has allowed limited transit through its waters under strict monitoring and potential fees, reportedly considering charges of up to $2 million per voyage.
The alternative route taken by these vessels lies south of the designated international shipping lanes and avoids the narrower, shallower northern passage. This may be particularly important for large tankers, which require deeper waters and wider navigation space.
Each of the oil tankers is estimated to be carrying around 2 million barrels of crude oil, while the LNG carrier appeared to be empty based on available tracking data. The ships stopped transmitting position signals near the Mussandam Peninsula, making it unclear whether they completed the full transit.
The route change also highlights growing challenges in maritime tracking, with signal jamming and spoofing reported in the region. These disruptions have made it increasingly difficult to monitor vessel movements accurately.
The situation continues to impact global energy markets, as the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints. Any disruption or rerouting of traffic has significant implications for oil supply chains and international pricing.
