the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, collapsed during afternoon prayers. The building's foundation failed under the weight of ongoing construction, trapping students and staff beneath the rubble. At least nine people were confirmed dead, and approximately 60 others, including 13 to 19-year-old students, remain unaccounted for.
Jayanti Mandasari, a 43-year-old mother, received a call from her son, M. Muhfi Alfian, just before the collapse. He had asked for money to buy snacks for his friends, a request that now haunts her. Upon hearing of the school's collapse, Jayanti rushed to the site, where she joined other parents anxiously awaiting news. Despite extensive rescue efforts, no signs of life have been detected since Thursday.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly, using tunnels, sensors, and manual searches to locate survivors. Heavy machinery has been brought in to clear debris, but the absence of vital signs has left rescuers and families in despair. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about the safety standards of Indonesia's pesantren system, which serves approximately 7 million students across 42,000 institutions.
The collapse has prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the building's structural integrity and the oversight of construction projects at educational institutions. Families affected by the disaster are demanding justice and accountability, urging authorities to ensure such a tragedy does not occur again.
