India Clears 17 New Electronics Component Plants Under ECMS

In a significant boost to the country’s electronics manufacturing ambitions, the government on Monday cleared 17 new projects under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). With this, the total number of approved projects has risen to 24, marking one of the strongest pushes yet to build a competitive, self-reliant component ecosystem.

The newly approved proposals include three units dedicated to camera module manufacturing, nine plants for multilayer printed circuit boards (PCB), two for optical transceivers, and several others for key components used in mobile phones and electronic devices. Together, these projects are expected to attract ₹7,172 crore in investment and generate production worth ₹65,111 crore over the coming years.

The manufacturing facilities will be spread across nine states and Union Territories, including Goa, Jammu & Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh, giving a wider regional spread to India’s emerging component ecosystem. Officials said the scheme was intentionally kept focused on critical components that can anchor the country’s long-term electronics growth, instead of spreading incentives too thin.

Among the companies receiving approval are homegrown players such as Aequs Consumer Products, Jabil Circuit India, Zetwerk subsidiaries Zetfab India and Zetchem Supply Chain Services, Uno Minda, and Syrma SGS unit Syrma Mobility. Several of these firms are expected to set up high-tech facilities, including the country’s first optical transceiver manufacturing unit, India’s first-ever 40-layer PCB plant, and its first quartz crystal factory — all essential components for next-generation electronics.

The government has repeatedly underlined the need for stronger domestic design, better product quality, and deeper supply chains for raw materials. The ECMS push aligns with this direction, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and position India as a reliable global manufacturing partner.

As the electronics sector continues to expand rapidly, these new projects signal a clear acceleration in India’s bid to become a major component-producing nation, strengthening the foundation for everything from smartphones and appliances to advanced digital devices.
