The two-year conflict in Gaza may have finally reached a crucial inflection point, following a cautiously "positive" response from the Palestinian group Hamas to United States President Donald Trump’s comprehensive 20-point peace plan. The announcement, which came late Friday, has generated a wave of hopeful, yet cautious, reactions from world leaders and key mediators, all eager to seize this moment to end the devastating war.
Hamas’s statement indicates a willingness to move forward on certain critical elements of the plan. Crucially, the group announced its readiness to release all remaining hostages and hand over power in Gaza to other Palestinian entities. This commitment addresses two major immediate obstacles to a cessation of hostilities.
However, the response was not a full acceptance. Hamas specified that other components of the 20-point proposal require further negotiation. A primary sticking point remains Israel's key demand, included in Trump's plan: the complete disarming of Hamas. The group’s statement made no mention of this issue, suggesting hard talks lie ahead.
Global reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, viewing Hamas's commitment to releasing hostages and relinquishing control as a major step forward.
Key Mediators Welcome the Move: Qatar and Egypt, central to the negotiation efforts, were quick to welcome the news. Qatar affirmed support for the US President’s call for an "immediate ceasefire" to facilitate the "safe and swift release of hostages." Egypt expressed hope for a "positive development" and pledged to work with international partners to secure a permanent ceasefire.
Encouragement from Major Powers: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Hamas had "shown... that it is ready for peace," declaring that a "window of opportunity" has opened. European leaders, including the Presidents of France and the European Union Commission, hailed the response as "encouraging," urging all parties to "seize the moment" to achieve peace.
Israel’s Position: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, while reportedly shocked by Trump’s immediate call for Israel to "immediately stop bombing Gaza," announced that the military was "preparing for the immediate implementation of the first stage of the Trump plan for the release of all the hostages." However, the statement added that Israel would continue to work with the US "in accordance with the principles set out by Israel," signaling resistance to changes in the original proposal, particularly concerning disarming Hamas.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas underscored the critical next steps, stating that the priority is an "immediate commitment to a complete ceasefire, the release of all hostages and prisoners," and the "urgent delivery of humanitarian aid."
The positive signal from Hamas, supported by other Palestinian groups like the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, is seen by the United Nations and numerous world powers as a "vital opportunity." As UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged, all parties must "seize the opportunity to bring the tragic conflict in Gaza to an end," with the hope that this will lead to a two-state solution and lasting peace.
