German authorities have arrested a married couple accused of spying for China and gathering sensitive information related to advanced military-use technologies. The arrests were carried out in the southern German city of Munich as part of an ongoing national security investigation involving suspected links to Chinese intelligence operations.
According to Germany’s federal prosecution service, the two suspects, identified only as Xuejun C. and Hua S., are believed to have worked on behalf of a Chinese intelligence agency. Officials stated that the couple allegedly attempted to collect information connected to aerospace engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, and other advanced research sectors with possible military applications.
Investigators said the accused developed contacts with academics and researchers at German universities and scientific institutions over an extended period. Prosecutors alleged that the pair used false professional identities, including posing as interpreters and employees of an automobile company, in order to gain access to experts and research communities.
Authorities further claimed that several German scientists were invited to China under the impression that they would deliver lectures to civilian audiences. However, prosecutors said some of these visits allegedly involved presentations before employees connected to Chinese state-owned defense manufacturers and military-linked organizations.
German police and intelligence officials conducted searches at the couple’s homes and workplaces in Munich following the arrests. Additional investigative measures were also reportedly carried out in Berlin and several other cities involving around ten individuals considered potential witnesses in the wider investigation.
The case has intensified concerns in Germany and across Europe regarding foreign espionage activities targeting strategic technologies, academic institutions, and defense-related research. Security experts have repeatedly warned that advanced sectors such as artificial intelligence, aerospace systems, semiconductor technology, and cybersecurity remain major targets for international intelligence operations.
German officials have not yet released complete details about the evidence gathered during the investigation, and no official response from Chinese authorities had been reported at the time of publication. The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors continue examining possible links between the suspects and foreign intelligence networks.
The arrests come amid growing international tensions over technology security, intellectual property protection, and allegations of foreign interference in scientific and industrial research across Europe and other Western countries.
