A parking inspector and his wife have been arrested on suspicion of stealing more than €1 million from parking meters in the small German town of Kempten. The inspector, who works for the town, is believed to have taken coins from parking meters many times and put the money into bank accounts that his wife could access.
The theft was discovered after a credit institution reported unusual money transactions, which led the police to start an investigation. The inspector faces charges for 720 cases of theft, while his wife is charged with helping him commit the crime in the same number of cases.
The mayor of Kempten, Thomas Kiechle, expressed shock and disappointment at the news. He said a commission will be set up to review work processes, find weak points, and fix them to prevent similar crimes in the future.
The couple was arrested on November 24th after the police searched the office where the inspector worked. They are currently being held separately while the investigation continues. It is not yet known how long the couple had been stealing money from the parking meters.
Mayor Kiechle also mentioned that the names of the suspects cannot be shared at this time due to privacy rules and the ongoing investigation. He added that the legal process is ongoing, and the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Kempten is a historic town in southern Germany, located near the Allgäu hills, with a population of about 70,000 people.
This case has raised concerns about the safety and management of public funds in the town, prompting officials to take immediate steps to improve oversight and protect community resources.
