A significant fire erupted at BYD’s multi-level parking garage within its manufacturing complex in Shenzhen, prompting a swift emergency response and creating massive clouds of dark smoke that could be seen across the industrial landscape.
Incident Overview
The fire broke out in the Ma Luan subdistrict of Pingshan, where a sophisticated parking structure was completely set ablaze. Eyewitness accounts shared online depicted flames spreading rapidly through the multiple levels of the facility, with thick smoke visible from a distance.
Emergency teams, including fire and police responders, quickly arrived at the scene and diligently worked to manage and extinguish the fire. Authorities have confirmed the blaze is now fully controlled, with no injuries recorded.
Vehicles Involved Were Not Consumer-Ready
As per official communications, the parking garage in question was designated for storing test, experimental, and discarded vehicles. BYD clarified that no vehicles intended for customers or currently in production were impacted by this incident.
The company assured that its primary manufacturing activities at the Pingshan facility remain unaffected, ensuring continuity of production and deliveries.
Investigation into Cause Initiated
Preliminary insights from local media speculate that the fire could have stemmed from improper external construction efforts near the facility. At this point, any link to defects in the batteries of mass-produced vehicles has been ruled out.
Nonetheless, a comprehensive investigation is underway to unveil the exact cause of the fire and evaluate the damage incurred.
Operational Impact Assessment
In spite of the severity of this event, BYD’s overall operations continue to be stable. The automaker remains focused on expanding its infrastructure, including the recent deployment of thousands of fast-charging stations across China, reinforcing its commitment to the electric vehicle sector.
