Manila, Philippines – Aleson Shipping Lines' M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 tragically sank early on Monday (January 26, 2026) while operating a route between Zamboanga City and Jolo, Sulu.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the accident has claimed the lives of at least 15 individuals. At the time of the incident, the ferry was transporting approximately 332 passengers along with 27 crew members.
The vessel faced mechanical issues and subsequently went down near Baluk-Baluk Island off the coast of Basilan. Survivors indicate that a breach in the hull may have allowed water to inundate the ferry, leading to its rapid sinking.
Ongoing rescue operations are being conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard, navy, local authorities, and nearby fishing vessels. More than 200 individuals have been successfully rescued, but several remain unaccounted for. Medical teams are currently providing care to the injured in local hospitals.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the sinking. The Philippines, an archipelago, has experienced a series of ferry disasters due to adverse weather and safety concerns. Notably, a ferry fire in 2023 resulted in over 30 fatalities in the southern part of the country.
Search and rescue operations are continuing as the situation evolves.
