On November 22, 2025, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing earned the Best Actress title at Taiwan’s esteemed Golden Horse Awards, often referred to as the Oscars of the Chinese-speaking world. She was honored for her compelling portrayal in the Malaysian film Mother Bhumi, where she takes on the character of a widowed farmer and ritual healer, diverging from her typical glamorous roles.
Although Fan was unable to attend the Taipei ceremony, she delivered an emotional acceptance speech via phone, describing the role as profoundly transformative. Reflecting on a conversation with the director about altering her appearance for the part, she confidently affirmed her readiness to “go all the way.” This experience enriched her connection to the character and deepened her appreciation for women’s resilience.
The award was accepted on her behalf by director Chong Keat Aun, who also secured the Best Original Song award for the film. He expressed his gratitude to Fan Bingbing and conveyed his hopes for her new journey by dedicating the winning song to her.
Recent years have seen political tension overshadow the Golden Horse Awards. Since 2018, numerous Chinese artists have chosen to forgo the event due to strained relations between China and Taiwan. After a Taiwanese director expressed support for Taiwan's independence in 2019, Beijing imposed a ban on Chinese entertainers attending the awards. Nevertheless, the event continues to attract diverse talent from the region.
Other notable winners this year include the Taiwanese film A Foggy Tale for Best Film, which delves into Taiwan’s political narratives, and Hong Kong director Jun Li for Best Director with Queerpanorama. Taiwanese actor Chang Chen was awarded Best Leading Actor for his performance in Lucky Lu, a tale about an immigrant delivery man in New York.
The 2025 Golden Horse Awards celebrated a rich array of cinematic works and talent, spotlighting powerful narratives within the Chinese-speaking film industry. Fan Bingbing’s recognition signifies a significant milestone in her comeback journey within the film realm.
