Explosion Near Delhi's Red Fort Claims 9 Lives, 20 Injured

Explosion Near Delhi's Red Fort Claims 9 Lives, 20 Injured

Post by : Rameen Ariff

New Delhi: An explosion rocked the vicinity of the Red Fort on Tuesday evening, resulting in the tragic death of at least nine individuals and injuring approximately twenty more. The blast occurred around 6:40 PM near a white sedan parked close to the historic site, as the area thronged with evening visitors.

Delhi Police reports indicate the explosion was linked to the sedan, with the force of the blast igniting nearby vehicles and shattering windows of nearby establishments. Emergency crews swiftly arrived on the scene, transporting the injured to LNJP and RML hospitals for urgent care.

Initial investigations point to the deployment of an improvised explosive device (IED). Senior officials from the Delhi Police Special Cell and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are now involved in probing the incident. Police sources discovered metal fragments and electronic components from the site, currently undergoing forensic evaluation.

Due to the gravity of the incident, authorities have activated the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) as they explore possible terrorist connections. A substantial security perimeter is established around the Red Fort area, which will remain closed to the public for three days. Additionally, security measures have increased across various critical landmarks in the city, such as India Gate, Parliament House, and key metro stations.

Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, who surveyed the site, confirmed the blast was intentional and stated that various angles—including potential cross-border terror affiliations—are under scrutiny. “This was not an accident. We are viewing it as a terrorism case,” he remarked.

Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of chaos and panic post-explosion, with vendor Rakesh Sharma stating, “We heard a loud noise and then saw flames and smoke erupting from the car. Everyone began fleeing in panic.”

No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information on social media.
