Dubai's AED 500M Stormwater Drainage Project Reaches 36% Milestone

Dubai's AED 500M Stormwater Drainage Project Reaches 36% Milestone

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Significant strides have been made in Dubai's stormwater drainage development in Deira, with 36% completion reported by Dubai Municipality. This AED 500 million initiative is a vital part of the city's broader strategy to enhance its drainage and flood management systems.

Project Highlights

  • Investment: AED 500 million

  • Affected area: 13 districts covering 4,700 hectares

  • Extension: 60 km of stormwater drainage pipelines

  • Progress status: 36% completion (Initial Phase)

Designed to enhance stormwater management, this project aims to mitigate the chances of flooding during intense rainfall in vital urban areas.

Expanded Area Coverage

This upgrade affects major localities such as:
Al Qusais (1 & 2), Oud Al Muteena, Mizhar 3, Al Twar (1 & 3), Muhaisnah 4, Al Nahda 2, Al Qusais Industrial Area 1, Al Garhoud, Casablanca Street, the Dubai Airport area, and Al Rashidiya.

Progress in Engineering and Infrastructure Development

  • 22 km of drainage pipelines have been laid out in Phase 1

  • Pipe diameters up to 2.5 meters for optimized flow capacity

  • Construction of a new pumping station near Dubai Creek

  • Pumping capacity to reach 8,000 liters per second

Advanced engineering techniques are being employed to ensure smooth execution while minimizing disruption to local residents and businesses.

Integral to the Tasreef Programme

This initiative forms a critical part of Dubai's Tasreef Programme, a comprehensive AED 30 billion project aimed at modernizing the emirate’s stormwater network.

Key goals include:

  • Aiming for a 700% increase in infrastructure capacity

  • Cutting construction and maintenance expenses by 20%

  • Enhancing the lifespan of drainage systems

  • Boosting overall climate resilience

Government Insights and Future Vision

Leadership from Dubai Municipality emphasized that the development exemplifies a long-term strategy to establish a sustainable and future-ready city. The focus remains on boosting infrastructure capability, promoting urban expansion, and ensuring safety during severe weather situations.

Officials from the Waste and Sewerage Agency noted that state-of-the-art engineering solutions are in play to enhance drainage efficacy, mitigate flooding risks, and ensure consistent business operations in major commercial hubs.

As the Tasreef Programme proceeds, Dubai is set on fortifying its stormwater infrastructure, thereby bolstering its status as one of the globe's most advanced urban environments.
