Doha has inaugurated an extraordinary cultural gem with the unveiling of the M.F. Husain Museum, known as Lawh Wa Qalam. This museum honors the life, artistry, and global influence of Maqbool Fida Husain, acclaimed as the “Picasso of India.” His artistic journey transcends borders and cultures, enriching the 20th century’s creative landscape. Located within Qatar Foundation’s Education City, the museum spans over 3,000 square meters, offering visitors an engaging and dynamic artistic experience in line with Husain’s vivid vision.
The museum’s architecture draws inspiration from a simple sketch by Husain. This led to the creation of four distinctive structures: a vibrant blue block, a tall white cylindrical tower, a striking yellow pathway, and a tent-like element. These designs symbolize the movement, curiosity, and emotional zeal inherent in Husain's vast oeuvre. He ventured across multiple artistic domains—painting, cinema, photography, calligraphy, and design—capturing the essence of his creativity.
The museum not only honors Husain's artistic prowess but also emphasizes his deep-rooted cultural affinities with the Middle East. His collaboration with Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, significantly influenced the latter part of his career. She cherished his distinctive representation of Arab civilization, leading to numerous commissioned works, and his acceptance of Qatari citizenship in 2010. Born in 1915 in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, Husain spent many years in Dubai, London, and Doha—regions that shaped his global persona.
The museum’s grand opening attracted pivotal cultural icons from around the globe, including Bollywood filmmaker and designer Gauri Khan, renowned fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, and Maharaja and Maharani of Baroda, Samarjitsinh and Radhikaraje Gaekwad. Their participation underscored Husain’s enduring influence across generations and nations. Family members, including Mustafa Husain, were also present, adding a poignant touch to this historic event.
Guests can navigate through various phases of Husain’s artistic journey, gaining insight into his evolution. The museum's galleries enable free movement, reflecting the unbounded creativity Husain celebrated throughout his life. With vivid colors and expressive forms, his artworks tell stories resonating with both his Indian heritage and international experiences. Multimedia installations enrich visitors' comprehension of Husain’s narrative style and his cultural connections worldwide.
The launch of the Lawh Wa Qalam – M.F. Husain Museum marks a pivotal enhancement to Doha's cultural scene. It promises to become a significant destination for art enthusiasts, scholars, and visitors from abroad. This museum reinforces Qatar’s dedication to preserving global art and fostering spaces that nurture creativity, ensuring that Husain's inspiring legacy continues to motivate future generations who value innovation and artistic bravery.
