Doctor Receives 30-Month Sentence in Connection with Matthew Perry's Death

Doctor Receives 30-Month Sentence in Connection with Matthew Perry's Death

Post by : Meena Ariff

A physician in the Los Angeles area has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for his role in supplying ketamine that played a part in actor Matthew Perry’s tragic death. Dr. Salvador Plasencia, 44, was also fined $5,600 after admitting guilt to several felony charges.

On October 28, 2023, Perry, 54, was discovered unresponsive in his hot tub, with the autopsy highlighting the “acute effects of ketamine” as a significant contributor to his demise.

It was revealed that Plasencia had administered ketamine to Perry multiple times in the weeks prior to his death, both at the actor's home and in a vehicle. Perry, who had a well-documented history of substance abuse, had previously sought out ketamine treatment for anxiety and depression at a licensed facility, but turned to alternative sources when those needs weren't met.

Court records indicate that Plasencia procured the drug from a colleague and enabled its use in ways that took advantage of Perry’s addiction. Text messages uncovered showed attempts to exploit the actor’s vulnerability for profit. Several others involved in this case, including a personal aide and drug suppliers, have accepted guilt and are now awaiting sentencing.

During the court proceedings, Plasencia expressed regret, taking responsibility and issuing apologies to Perry’s family. The judge criticized the behavior that exacerbated the actor's struggles, while Perry’s mother delivered a heartfelt statement on the breach of medical ethics.
