A low-intensity earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale struck Delhi on Monday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were felt at approximately 8:44 am, with the epicenter located in North Delhi at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers.
The NCS confirmed the details: "Earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred on 19/01/2026 at 08:44:16 IST, latitude 28.86 N, longitude 77.06 E, depth 5 km, location North Delhi."
This recent seismic activity is not unusual, as Delhi is situated in Zone IV, one of the most seismically active regions in India, categorized as the second-highest risk zone. Despite this, Delhi has not experienced any earthquake above magnitude 5 in the past decade.
Earlier this month, on January 13, a mild earthquake measuring 3.5 in magnitude jolted the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. The quake occurred near Kapkot town, roughly 30 kilometers from the district headquarters. It was reported at 7:25 am, causing residents to rush outside their homes. Fortunately, officials confirmed there were no casualties or significant damage.
The Delhi-NCR region has witnessed several moderate earthquakes in recent years, including a 4.1-magnitude quake in Haryana in 2022. While these quakes have been shallow, they have caused minimal damage so far.
Residents are advised to remain calm but stay alert and prepared, considering the region's susceptibility to seismic events. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure public safety.
