On Sunday, Delhi-NCR was enveloped in a dense smog, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to alarming levels, drastically reducing visibility across the region. Residents in prominent areas including India Gate, Mahipalpur, and East Delhi reported dire air quality, leading to urgent demands for government action against escalating pollution.
Environmental advocates and local citizens gathered for protests at India Gate, calling for swift action to tackle the deteriorating air quality. While some protesters faced temporary detentions by authorities for congregating without proper permissions, they were subsequently released. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the government's response, stressing the need for urgent measures while protecting citizens advocating for cleaner air.
Gandhi stated, “It’s unacceptable that Delhi-NCR AQI has reached perilous heights today. Peaceful citizens advocating for clean air should never be treated as offenders. Immediate intervention is crucial.”
In light of the upcoming MCD bypolls, Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta pointed to previous government shortcomings in urban development, correlating pollution levels to deficiencies in urban planning and infrastructure. Additionally, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal indicated intentions to address Delhi's air quality crisis during the forthcoming Parliament winter session, warning that winter smog could transform the capital into a “gas chamber,” endangering health, particularly for lungs, hearts, brains, and unborn children.
Alongside the pollution crisis, Delhi also recorded incidents raising safety alarms, including a tragic electrocution case involving a 23-year-old woman in Mahipalpur.
Authorities are closely tracking the situation, urging citizens to restrict outdoor activities, wear masks, and stay updated on air quality alerts due to critically high AQI levels.
The sharp increase in pollution today has triggered extensive discussions on both social media and civic platforms, with widespread calls for governmental action to avert further risks to public health.
