De De Pyaar De 2: A Fresh Take on Love and Age

De De Pyaar De 2: A Fresh Take on Love and Age

Post by : Meena Ariff

"We are educated, progressive individuals. Hum modern log hain." This line encapsulates the spirit of De De Pyaar De 2, a romantic comedy that explores contemporary relationships filled with humor and emotion. The film cleverly shifts the narrative around women, presenting them as self-sufficient and outspoken—an invigorating change for a genre often criticized for outdated clichés.

Rakul Preet Singh plays Ayesha, a determined woman entangled with her older, divorced beau, Ashish (Ajay Devgn). Her parents, Rakesh and Anu (R. Madhavan and Gautami Kapoor), are a modern, sexually liberated couple, but their facade is threatened when they realize Ashish's age surpasses Rakesh's. Madhavan shines as the overbearing father, infusing humor while challenging societal expectations regarding age and romance.

Even though Ajay Devgn's role isn't extensive, his presence as a steady and composed partner leaves a significant impact. The ensemble cast, featuring Jaaved and Meezaan Jaaferi, Suhasini Mulay, and Ishita Dutta, enriches the film with warmth, humor, and depth, especially in scenes that highlight shared moments over Punjabi meals or sage advice from grandparents.

The film takes bold strides in addressing ageism, patriarchy, emotional manipulation, and the societal double standards, paving the way for candid discussions. Ayesha’s independence and authority mark a departure from traditional depictions of women in rom-coms. The film also gives a playful nod to popular culture and Bollywood classics, enhancing its charm without compromising its core message.

De De Pyaar De 2 presents an engaging and forward-thinking romantic comedy that artfully balances humor with a thoughtful examination of modern relationships. It respects its audience, rewrites conventional norms, and ensures there’s room for laughter—even with the occasional expletive modification.
