In a gripping showdown on Friday, Bologna advanced to the Italian Super Cup final after defeating Inter Milan in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The match ended 1-1 after regular time, leading to a penalty shoot-out where Bologna triumphed 3-2. Ciro Immobile successfully converted the decisive penalty, earning Bologna a chance to face Napoli, who had previously defeated AC Milan 2-0.
Immobile, who has battled through a season marred by injuries, commented, "I've had three and a half months of suffering but I have a big family who helped me." His pivotal penalty in front of a small audience in Saudi Arabia marked a significant moment for him and his teammates.
The match witnessed an explosive start from Inter Milan, with Marcus Thuram netting the opener through a stunning volley. However, Riccardo Orsolini equalized for Bologna with a penalty shot just before halftime, leveling the game. The score remained even until the penalty shoot-out, where Bologna displayed composure, while Inter's Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolo Barella, and Ange-Yoan Bonny faltered, sealing Bologna's victory.
Traditionally, the Italian Super Cup features the champions of Serie A and Coppa Italia. However, starting in 2023, the event has expanded to include runners-up from both competitions. This four-team tournament will continue to take place in Saudi Arabia until 2029.
With the final against Napoli on the horizon, Immobile stated, "Napoli are in great shape, but it’s a one-off match and anything can happen." Anticipation is high among fans for a thrilling contest between these two formidable teams.
