Taiwan has raised concerns about what it describes as "abnormal" changes within China’s military leadership, following the announcement that two of China’s top generals are under investigation. Defence Minister Wellington Koo stated on Monday that Taiwan is closely monitoring these developments and will employ various methods to interpret Beijing’s intentions amid this rare internal probe.
China revealed on Saturday that Zhang Youxia, the vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and the second-highest military officer under President Xi Jinping, is being investigated for suspected serious violations of discipline and law. Along with Zhang, Liu Zhenli, another senior military commander, is also facing investigation.
Such high-profile probes into senior military officials are highly unusual in China’s political and military landscape. This move signals possible internal challenges within the People’s Liberation Army or efforts by President Xi Jinping to tighten control over the armed forces during a critical period of geopolitical tension.
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry emphasized the significance of analyzing these events carefully, as any instability or power shifts in China’s military could have serious implications for regional security. Given Taiwan’s proximity and ongoing security concerns related to China, the island nation remains vigilant to any developments that might impact peace in the Taiwan Strait.
The investigation of Zhang Youxia, a key figure close to President Xi, suggests that China’s leadership might be confronting issues related to discipline or loyalty within its top ranks. This could reflect broader efforts to consolidate power and ensure the military’s alignment with the central government’s strategic goals.
Observers around the world are watching closely as these internal investigations unfold, noting that they come at a time when China is facing increasing international pressure and Taiwan is bolstering its own defense preparedness.
The evolving situation adds to the complex dynamics of cross-strait relations and raises questions about the stability and future direction of China’s military leadership.
