Canada Advocates for Immediate Ceasefire in Lebanon

Canada Advocates for Immediate Ceasefire in Lebanon

Post by : Shweta

In response to escalating tensions in Lebanon, Canada has called for an immediate ceasefire alongside stronger protections for civilians. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand highlighted the critical need to uphold international law and prioritize civilian safety in her recent statement.

The statement urged Israel to honor Lebanon's territorial integrity while also appealing to Hezbollah to disarm and comply with decisions established by the Lebanese government. Canada emphasized that both parties must agree to a lasting ceasefire to avert further escalation and civilian casualties.

Minister Anand voiced strong condemnation of the recent Israeli airstrikes throughout Lebanon, particularly those in Beirut, which resulted in civilian harm and infrastructure damage. Concurrently, she criticized Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel, labeling them indiscriminate and harmful to non-combatants.

Additionally, Canada reiterated its backing for the Lebanese government’s initiatives to reestablish full authority within its borders, including tackling the presence of armed factions like Hezbollah, recognized by Canada as a terrorist group, in pursuit of long-term stability.

The statement underscored the necessity for diplomatic solutions to the current situation. Canada called for renewed global efforts aimed at achieving a sustainable and peaceful resolution, underlining the importance of respecting Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

These remarks embody Canada’s broader stance on the conflict, which emphasizes de-escalation, the protection of civilians, and the significance of dialogue in resolving regional tensions.
