Canada PM Backs Removing Prince Andrew from Royal Succession

Canada PM Backs Removing Prince Andrew from Royal Succession

Post by : Shakul

Tokyo: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed support for removing Prince Andrew from the British royal line of succession, describing his behaviour as “deplorable” amid renewed scrutiny over his links to convicted US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Tokyo, Carney said that while there is a formal legal process required to alter the order of succession, Andrew’s actions and the controversies surrounding him justify reconsidering his position in the royal line. The former royal was stripped of his military titles and royal duties in 2022 following intense public pressure related to the Epstein scandal.

Andrew has faced allegations connected to Epstein for years. In 2022 he settled a civil lawsuit in the United States filed by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she had been trafficked by Epstein and forced to have sex with the prince when she was a teenager. Andrew denied the allegations but reached an out-of-court settlement without admitting liability.

Carney’s remarks came as several Commonwealth countries debate the issue of Andrew’s position in the royal succession. Any formal change would have to be initiated by the United Kingdom and approved by the other Commonwealth realms that recognise King Charles III as head of state.

The controversy continues to place pressure on the British monarchy as governments and lawmakers across Commonwealth nations call for stronger accountability and transparency regarding members of the royal family.
