Cambodia is increasing fuel imports from Singapore and Malaysia to offset supply shortages caused by export restrictions from Vietnam and China, amid rising global energy tensions.
The shift comes as a result of disruptions linked to geopolitical conflicts, which have tightened fuel availability worldwide. Around one-third of Cambodia’s petrol stations have reportedly shut down temporarily, with authorities investigating possible stockpiling amid fears of further price hikes.
Energy Minister Keo Rottanak said the country is relying on strong partnerships with global suppliers such as TotalEnergies and Chevron to manage supply risks and stabilize fuel availability.
Cambodia remains vulnerable due to the absence of domestic refining capacity and limited fuel reserves, typically holding less than a month’s supply. However, the country has partially reduced its dependence on fossil fuels through rapid investment in renewable energy.
Officials also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, suggesting that an integrated ASEAN power grid could improve energy resilience and reduce the impact of global supply disruptions in the future.
