Hospital Relocation Claim Denied

Hospital Relocation Claim Denied

Post by : Shakul

Bukit Mertajam Hospital has strongly denied allegations circulating on social media that it is being relocated to avoid disrupting a nearby temple. Authorities clarified that the claims are false, misleading, and intended to create unnecessary public confusion.

The hospital’s Board of Visitors spokesperson Ng Yi Cheah lodged a police report in Seberang Perai after the claims surfaced online. He stated that the viral post falsely attributed remarks to Steven Sim Chee Keong, the Member of Parliament for Bukit Mertajam, regarding a supposed relocation linked to a temple issue.

Ng clarified that no such discussion ever took place. Instead, previous meetings with officials focused on improving healthcare infrastructure to meet the rising demand for medical services in the region. He emphasised that the hospital has no plans to relocate and that the allegations are defamatory in nature.

Officials confirmed that the current proposal involves expanding the existing facility rather than shifting its location. Plans for an additional hospital block have been in place since 2023, driven by increasing patient numbers, including those from nearby areas such as Kulim. The Penang state government has already allocated land for the expansion, which is under review by the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

Authorities also warned that the spread of such misinformation could trigger racial or religious tensions. They have urged strict action against those responsible for circulating false claims.

Reaffirming its commitment to public service, the hospital stated that it serves all communities regardless of race or religion, and that the expansion project is aimed solely at improving healthcare access and capacity for the growing population.
