Bangladesh Urges ICC to Relocate T20 World Cup Matches Over Safety Issues

Bangladesh Urges ICC to Relocate T20 World Cup Matches Over Safety Issues

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is encountering major upheaval regarding the T20 World Cup following a formal request from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to shift Bangladesh’s matches outside of India, citing player safety as a primary concern.

This request is particularly significant as the tournament is slated to commence on February 7, just weeks away. Bangladesh has proposed hosting its games in Sri Lanka, which could compel the ICC to rearrange venues, modify travel plans, and adjust match schedules at the last minute.

Tensions rose after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a decision that resulted in Kolkata Knight Riders terminating the IPL contract of Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Following this, relations between the two cricket boards deteriorated, mirroring a broader strain in diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh.

On Sunday, the BCB officially notified the ICC of its concerns about the safety of players in India under the current circumstances. Reports suggest the ICC is currently reviewing alternative scheduling methods, though this is proving to be quite challenging.

Under the original plan, Bangladesh was set to kick off its World Cup journey against the West Indies in Kolkata on February 7, followed by group matches against Italy and England, and concluding with a game against Nepal in Mumbai. Any relocation would necessitate new venues, hotel arrangements, broadcast logistics, and coordination with teams that have been preparing under a fixed schedule.

As administrators navigate this uncertainty, Bangladesh's preparations continue unabated on the field. The BCB has announced a 15-member squad for the tournament, with Litton Kumar Das named captain, indicating the team's focus despite the prevailing controversy.

In the midst of the ongoing discussion, Mustafizur Rahman has demonstrated his abilities on the pitch. The left-arm pacer played a key role in a recent win for Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League, showcasing his form as the World Cup approaches.

With the tournament countdown underway, the ICC faces the challenge of managing logistics, player morale, and competition integrity, all while scrambling to prevent a larger disruption to one of cricket’s most significant global events.
