Bangladesh is facing significant backlash after its decision to skip the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup matches in India. Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has accused the Bangladesh cricket authorities of allowing political interference in this crucial decision, raising alarms about its consequences for the players and the game.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) approached the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate their matches away from India, citing security concerns. The ICC rejected this request, obligating the team to either participate in India or withdraw entirely from the tournament. The T20 World Cup is scheduled to kick off on February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Tiwary highlighted that the Sports Ministry, rather than the cricket board itself, seemed to dictate the decision. He remarked to reporters, “Politics has infiltrated the sport, with political figures exerting influence over the board. Such decisions arise from this interference.”
Challenging the safety rationale, Tiwary referenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s safe visit to India, adding, “If a Prime Minister can visit safely, then surely the players have nothing to fear.”
Players have expressed disappointment, as representing one’s nation in a World Cup is a cherished dream for cricketers. Tiwary stressed that political influences should not disrupt sports. “This is detrimental for the players. They aspire to represent their country well in the World Cup, a tournament that can enhance their careers, but they feel helpless in this situation,” he stated.
Bangladesh is set to commence its T20 World Cup journey against the West Indies on February 7 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. Their schedule also includes matches against Italy on February 9 and England in Kolkata, followed by a game against Nepal in Mumbai at Wankhede Stadium. This ongoing controversy may hinder the team’s preparation and mental state as they approach these pivotal matches.
This incident underscores the ongoing strife between politics and sports, revealing how external decisions can impact athletes and international sporting events. Experts and former players like Tiwary advocate for cricket boards to operate independently without political pressures, so players remain free to showcase their abilities on the world stage.
