As April's President of the UN Security Council, Bahrain led a significant open debate regarding “The Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question,” spearheaded by Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The event saw attendance from prominent figures such as Khaled Khiari, Espen Barth Eide, and Tony Blair.
In his remarks, Dr. Al Zayani reiterated Bahrain's commitment to upholding global peace and security. He emphasized the crucial need for a fair and enduring resolution to the Palestinian dilemma, asserting that this is vital for Middle Eastern stability.
Bahrain confirmed its backing for the Palestinian people's rights, advocating for their self-determination and the formation of an independent state founded on 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and various international resolutions.
Moreover, he underscored the necessity of executing UN Security Council Resolution 2803 as a fundamental measure to cease hostilities in Gaza, bolster the ceasefire, and endorse the proposed “Board of Peace.”
Dr. Al Zayani highlighted the proactive role of Bahrain’s leadership, including King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, in global peace endeavors, pointing to the King’s participation in the inaugural Board of Peace meeting held in Washington under Donald Trump’s chairmanship as an example of Bahrain’s diplomatic and humanitarian commitment.
He also stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolutions, urging respect for the historical and legal status of Jerusalem, safeguarding holy sites, and backing the custodianship of Jordan and the Al Quds Committee, led by King Mohammed VI.
Bahrain firmly opposed any forced displacement or demographic changes in the Palestinian territories, calling for an immediate stop to unlawful settlement expansions in the West Bank, urging against actions that could heighten tensions and extremism.
The minister noted that achieving long-term peace requires addressing broader regional issues. He called for a peaceful resolution of conflicts with Iran, emphasizing dialogue, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international regulations. Additionally, he highlighted the necessity of securing freedom of navigation in critical waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and called for an end to actions threatening regional stability.
Bahrain concluded its remarks by encouraging the global community to shift from merely managing crises to focusing on sustainable solutions through cooperative efforts, dialogue, and diplomacy to foster peace and stability throughout the region.
