Vienna:
On Saturday, a series of three avalanches in Austria resulted in eight fatalities among skiers, underscoring the alarming avalanche dangers in the region.
The first incident involved a female skier who was buried by an avalanche in the Bad Hofgastein region, taking place around 12:30 p.m. at an elevation of roughly 2,200 meters, as reported by the Pongau mountain rescue service.
Approximately 90 minutes later, another avalanche impacted the Gastein Valley, south of Salzburg. This second event entrapped seven skiers, leading to four fatalities, with two others suffering from severe injuries, while one individual managed to escape unharmed.
Later in the day, before 4:30 p.m., a third avalanche struck near Pusterwald in central Austria. Authorities reported that three Czech skiers lost their lives, while four others from the same group were successfully rescued and evacuated.
Gerhard Kremser, the head of the Pongau mountain rescue team, remarked that these incidents serve as a stark reminder of the risks posed by the ongoing conditions. He reiterated the importance of heeding the issued avalanche warnings and recognizing the associated dangers.
