Liverpool's manager, Arne Slot, has emphasized he has no desire for Mohamed Salah to depart from the team. Slot is scheduled to meet with Salah in person to determine his participation in Saturday’s Premier League clash against Brighton. This meeting arrives on the heels of Salah’s candid remarks following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United, which have sparked increased speculation about his future at the Merseyside club. Currently, Liverpool sits 10th in the league with 23 points from 15 matches, a stark contrast to their title-winning campaign last year.
Salah's absence from the recent Champions League victory against Inter Milan has only fueled the speculation. Slot clarified that this decision was made by the club, yet he holds complete authority over team selections. He mentioned that he frequently consults with sporting director Richard Hughes, but ultimately, he alone makes final decisions on the roster.
Slot refrained from providing any solid assurances regarding Salah’s future. He indicated to the press that any further discussions would be directly with Salah himself. He noted that multiple conversations have occurred between Salah, his agents, and the club following the match against Sunderland, leaving the future of the Premier League star shrouded in uncertainty.
Doubts also surround Alexander Isak’s readiness for the Brighton match. Slot disclosed that Isak sustained a knock during the initial half of the Inter Milan encounter and will undergo assessment before a definitive decision is reached. He lauded the evolving connection between Isak and Hugo Ekitike, highlighting that their rapport will strengthen with more playing time together.
Slot confirmed that Federico Chiesa has returned to fitness and will be available, while Wataru Endo and Cody Gakpo are sidelined for several weeks. Salah, dubbed the Egyptian King, has faced challenges this season following a stellar 2024-25 campaign. He is scheduled to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, meaning Liverpool must maintain their unbeaten streak without him while addressing off-field turmoil.
Sources indicate that Saudi clubs continue their pursuit of the star forward, and Salah’s recent comments have raised doubts about whether he will make his way back to Anfield following the tournament. As Liverpool aims to stabilize their season, the uncertainty surrounding Salah's future persists.
