Apple Inc. is reportedly testing a 200-megapixel camera sensor for a future iPhone model, signaling a major upgrade in its smartphone photography capabilities.
According to industry leaks, the company is experimenting with a larger 1/1.2-inch sensor, which could outperform current high-end sensors in terms of light capture and image quality. At present, Apple uses 48MP sensors in its flagship devices, focusing more on software optimization rather than megapixel count.
If introduced, the 200MP sensor would allow iPhones to capture more detailed images, improved low-light photos, and enhanced dynamic range, bringing them closer to or even ahead of competitors in hardware capabilities.
Currently, brands like Samsung have already adopted 200MP sensors in flagship devices, while Apple has taken a more measured approach, prioritizing consistent image processing and real-world performance.
The new sensor is expected to be sourced from Sony, Apple’s long-time camera supplier, known for its advanced imaging technology.
Reports also suggest that Apple is simultaneously working on other innovations, including a foldable iPhone, indicating a broader push toward next-generation hardware.
While the 200MP camera is still in the testing phase, it is unlikely to appear before the later part of the decade, possibly around 2027–2028, as Apple typically takes time to refine new technologies before commercial release.
