Malaysia PM Anwar Says IS-Linked Extremism Under Control

Malaysia PM Anwar Says IS-Linked Extremism Under Control

Post by : Shakul

Seberang Perai: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said extremist activities linked to the militant group Islamic State remain under control in Malaysia, but warned that authorities and citizens must remain vigilant against radicalisation threats.

Speaking at the launch of the Mengkuang Titi Mosque and the Nurul al-Quran celebration in Seberang Perai, Anwar said the country’s security agencies have been effective in monitoring and preventing extremist activities. His remarks came after the country’s police chief Mohd Khalid Ismail revealed that six Malaysian youths, including three minors, were suspected of being influenced by extremist networks linked to the Islamic State.

Anwar said young people could easily fall prey to radical propaganda if they lacked proper awareness and education. He stressed the importance of equipping youth with knowledge and critical thinking to prevent them from being manipulated by extremist ideologies circulating online and through foreign influence.

The Malaysian leader also urged citizens not to allow political disagreements or social issues to create division within society. He noted that Malaysia continues to enjoy relative peace and economic stability compared with many conflict-hit regions around the world.

Referring to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Anwar said countries like Iran and Gaza were facing destruction of infrastructure and religious sites, highlighting the importance of preserving peace and stability at home. He added that while Malaysia still faces domestic challenges such as rising living costs and infrastructure needs, these issues can only be addressed effectively if the country remains stable and united.
