Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the country’s diplomats to strengthen economic diplomacy efforts and focus on attracting high-quality investments that can support long-term national growth. The Prime Minister said diplomats now play a much larger role in shaping Malaysia’s economic future through international cooperation and strategic engagement.
Anwar made the remarks during a meeting with 13 newly appointed Malaysian Heads of Diplomatic Missions who will soon begin their assignments in several strategic regions around the world. He stressed that diplomats must go beyond traditional protocol duties and actively contribute to strengthening trade and investment opportunities for the country.
According to Anwar, modern diplomacy requires a deeper understanding of global political systems, local cultures, historical contexts, and international economic trends. He said effective diplomatic engagement can help Malaysia build stronger global partnerships while opening new opportunities for sustainable economic expansion.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of preparing a new generation of diplomats capable of handling increasingly complex global geopolitical and economic challenges. He said younger diplomats must be equipped with broad knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and strong communication skills to represent Malaysia effectively on the international stage.
Anwar noted that Malaysia remains committed to principles such as moderation, stability, good governance, and humanitarian values in its foreign policy approach. He said these principles continue to guide Malaysia’s international relations and diplomatic strategies amid changing global conditions.
The government is also placing greater emphasis on economic diplomacy as competition for global investments continues to increase among countries in the region. Officials believe stronger diplomatic networks can help attract technology investments, trade partnerships, infrastructure projects, and strategic collaborations that benefit Malaysia’s long-term development goals.
Observers say Malaysia’s focus on economic diplomacy reflects growing efforts by the government to position the country as a stable and competitive investment destination in Southeast Asia. The approach also aims to strengthen Malaysia’s influence in international trade and regional economic cooperation.
Anwar added that diplomats carry the responsibility of protecting Malaysia’s interests abroad while also promoting the nation’s image as a progressive, inclusive, and economically resilient country capable of adapting to global economic changes.
