On Wednesday morning, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar tragically lost his life in a plane crash near Baramati airport. The aircraft, a privately chartered Bombardier Learjet 45, was attempting an emergency landing when it crashed. Alongside Ajit Pawar, four others—including both pilots and two security personnel—also died in the accident.
The Learjet, registered as VT-SSK and operated by VSR Ventures Pvt. Ltd., departed from Mumbai at approximately 8:10 AM. The plane made an initial landing attempt at Baramati but was unsuccessful due to poor visibility conditions. A second approach was made shortly after, but the aircraft disappeared from radar near runway 11 around 8:45 AM before crashing in a fiery blaze near the runway threshold.
Emergency responders quickly reached the crash site, which was marked by scattered wreckage, thick smoke, and flames. Unfortunately, no survivors were found. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, with poor visibility suspected as a contributing factor.
Ajit Pawar, 66 years old, was traveling to Baramati to attend several public meetings ahead of the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections. He had participated in a cabinet meeting in Mumbai the day before. After the incident, his immediate family members, including his wife and son, rushed to Baramati.
The sudden loss has deeply shocked Maharashtra. The Prime Minister expressed his condolences, remembering Ajit Pawar as a devoted leader with a strong bond to the people. Leaders across the state have mourned his passing, acknowledging his relentless dedication and significant contributions to Maharashtra’s development.
