On Wednesday, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 150 kilometers below the surface, with the epicenter located at latitude 2.43 degrees North and longitude 98.98 degrees East.
This recent quake adds to Indonesia’s frequent experiences with seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire." The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped zone around the Pacific Ocean known for its active volcanoes and regular earthquakes. It stretches about 40,000 kilometers long and 500 kilometers wide, containing two-thirds of the world’s volcanoes and 90% of the Earth’s earthquakes.
Earlier in October, Indonesia faced a stronger earthquake of magnitude 6.6 in West Papua. That quake occurred at a depth of 55 kilometers beneath the surface, with its epicenter at latitude 2.26 degrees South and longitude 138.86 degrees East.
Indonesia’s position on this highly active geological belt makes it prone to natural events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis. The country, home to over 270 million people, remains alert and prepared due to the regular nature of such events.
The National Center for Seismology continues to monitor the region closely to provide timely updates and ensure the safety of residents in vulnerable areas.
