An alarming grizzly bear attack injured 11 individuals, consisting of students and educators, during a nature excursion in Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada. The occurrence took place on Thursday afternoon on a well-frequented walking trail located about 700 kilometers northwest of Vancouver.
Local authorities reported that a group of fourth- and fifth-grade students from Acwsalcta School was on the trail when a grizzly bear unexpectedly charged at them. The attack incited widespread panic as teachers and nearby adults rushed to safeguard the children.
Emergency responders stated that two people were critically wounded, and two others sustained serious injuries, while the rest received treatment on site. One teacher, who bravely tried to shield the students, was airlifted for urgent care after suffering significant injuries.
In response to the incident, the Nuxalk Nation issued a warning urging residents to stay indoors as the bear remained unaccounted for. Police and conservation officers equipped with safety gear initiated a search of the area to mitigate further risks.
Parents expressed their fears over the incident. One mother recounted how her 10-year-old son was so close to the bear that he “felt its fur” passing by. Teachers attempted to use bear spray to deter the animal, but some students were inadvertently affected by the spray amidst the chaos.
The school announced its closure for Friday and will provide counseling services to both students and staff. The community has shown great concern and relief that the situation did not escalate further, labeling the event among the most terrifying their school has encountered.
Authorities are actively watching the area, advising residents to exercise caution while the bear is still being sought.
