Zohran Mamdani To Move Into Gracie Mansion After Election Win

Zohran Mamdani To Move Into Gracie Mansion After Election Win

Post by : Rameen Ariff

New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that he will move into Gracie Mansion, the historic residence of New York mayors, officially leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a major topic during his election campaign.

Gracie Mansion, built in 1799, has served as the official home for most New York City mayors since World War II. However, Mamdani, who made affordable housing a central part of his campaign, did not immediately say he would live there after winning the November election.

In a statement released on Monday, Mamdani said the choice was guided by family safety and the need to stay fully focused on delivering the affordability agenda that New Yorkers voted for.
He added that moving into the secure and official residence would allow him to dedicate more time and energy to the city’s housing challenges.

Until now, Mamdani has lived in Astoria, Queens — a neighbourhood known for its diverse immigrant communities, local restaurants, and middle-class families.
“To Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City,” he said, adding that the community will continue to shape the work he does for the city.

Throughout the campaign, Mamdani connected his signature promise — freezing rents in New York City — to his own experience living in a rent-stabilised apartment.
But his opponents, especially former Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised him for staying in the apartment despite belonging to a well-known family. His mother, Mira Nair, is an award-winning filmmaker, and his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a respected professor at Columbia University.

Not all previous mayors chose to live in Gracie Mansion.
Michael preferred staying in his Upper East Side townhouse during his three terms and used Gracie Mansion mainly for public city events, even funding major renovations.

When Mamdani moves into the mansion around his January 1 inauguration, he will enter a dramatically different environment compared to his modest Astoria home.
Gracie Mansion, with its soft yellow exterior, green shutters, white railings, and sweeping views of the East River, is considered one of New York’s most charming historic homes.
The interior, especially the lower level, reflects the Federal-era design of the late 18th century.

The property reportedly has five bedrooms and features enhanced security measures for the mayor’s family.
Over the years, some residents have even claimed the house is haunted.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill de Blasio, mentioned strange incidents like doors opening on their own.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams also insisted in 2022, “There are ghosts in there, man.”

Mamdani’s current apartment is rent-stabilised, meaning the city strictly limits annual rent increases.
He reportedly paid around $2,300 per month, while the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City has reached $3,500, according to real estate platform Zillow.
This price gap has made rent-stabilised units crucial for thousands of residents struggling with the city’s rising housing costs.

As Mamdani prepares to take office, his move to Gracie Mansion marks both a personal shift and a political statement — placing him at the centre of New York’s long-running battle over affordable housing, rent control, and rising living costs.
