Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on May 20, 2026, during a high-profile meeting aimed at reaffirming the strong strategic partnership between China and Russia.
The visit came only days after US President Donald Trump completed his own diplomatic trip to Beijing, drawing global attention to China’s growing influence in international politics and diplomacy.
Xi Jinping hosted Putin at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with a formal welcome ceremony that included honor guards and children waving Chinese and Russian flags. After the ceremony, both leaders held bilateral talks focused on energy cooperation, security and long-term economic relations.
Officials from both countries later attended a signing ceremony for several cooperation agreements. Chinese state media reported that the two nations agreed to extend their friendship treaty originally signed in 2001, further strengthening bilateral ties.
Experts said the timing of Putin’s visit highlights China’s efforts to maintain strong relations with multiple global powers while presenting itself as a major diplomatic force. Analysts noted that Beijing wants to show it can cooperate closely with both Russia and the United States at the same time.
During the talks, Russia and China discussed oil and gas cooperation, especially as the ongoing Iran conflict continues to disrupt global energy markets. Russian officials stated that oil exports from Russia to China increased significantly during the first quarter of 2026.
Putin praised the relationship between Moscow and Beijing, describing it as an important factor for global stability and balance. He said cooperation between the two countries helps maintain international security and supports economic stability.
Chinese officials reiterated that China remains neutral regarding the Ukraine conflict while continuing trade relations with Russia despite sanctions imposed by Western nations. China remains one of Russia’s biggest trading partners and a major buyer of Russian energy supplies.
Putin also welcomed the improving dialogue between China and the United States, saying stable relations between the world’s largest economies would positively affect global markets and international economic growth.
