Safety Alert: Abu Dhabi Police Caution Against Indoor Heating Hazards

Safety Alert: Abu Dhabi Police Caution Against Indoor Heating Hazards

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Abu Dhabi Police have disclosed five instances of suffocation related to the unsafe use of charcoal and firewood for heating in residential settings across the UAE, highlighting the significant dangers associated with improper winter heating practices.

In response to these incidents, emergency services acted swiftly to ensure that no fatalities resulted. Specialized teams promptly addressed the cases, as part of ongoing initiatives to protect public safety during the colder months.

Major General Mohammed Suhail Al Rashdi, the Director of the Criminal Security Sector at Abu Dhabi Police, emphasized the risks posed by the use of traditional heating sources indoors without adequate safety measures. He warned that burning charcoal or firewood in enclosed spaces can lead to a swift accumulation of toxic gases, presenting a serious risk to health.

This warning is part of the authorities' winter awareness campaign, “Our Winter is Safe and Enjoyable,” which aims to educate the public about seasonal dangers, including the threat of suffocation and fire hazards stemming from unsafe heating techniques. Residents are urged to avoid using firewood, charcoal, or any type of electrical heating device indoors unless strict safety guidelines are followed.

Abu Dhabi Police advise residents to maintain proper ventilation when utilizing any heating apparatus and to ensure all heating devices are fully extinguished or turned off before sleeping or exiting the home. They also encourage families to depend on approved and well-maintained heating systems, along with regular checks on smoke detectors and safety measures in place.

Officials have reiterated that community cooperation is vital in preventing winter-related incidents and have urged individuals to report unsafe heating practices to safeguard lives and property throughout the UAE.
