TVK chief Vijay has been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in connection with the Karur stampede case. He has been instructed to appear before the agency on Monday, January 12. The Supreme Court had earlier ordered a CBI investigation into the tragedy.
The stampede occurred during Vijay’s rally on September 27, resulting in 41 deaths and injuring at least 60 people. Nearly 30,000 attendees gathered at a venue designed for only about 10,000 people. Authorities noted that security protocols were violated, and proper arrangements for food and drinking water were lacking, contributing to the disaster.
Vijay was scheduled to arrive at 12 pm but reached the venue around 7 pm. By that time, the crowd had swelled, and his arrival reportedly triggered another surge as his campaign bus approached. People climbed trees, rooftops, and power lines, forcing authorities to cut electricity to prevent electrocution. When Vijay finally appeared, attendees pushed, jostled, and even threw slippers at the bus to grab his attention, causing many to faint. Police resorted to a lathi charge to control the situation.
The day after the tragedy, Vijay announced compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each deceased’s family and Rs 2 lakh for the injured. His statewide tour was also suspended following the incident.
TVK Karur West District Secretary Mathiyazhagan was arrested for lapses in safety arrangements but was later released after the court refused to extend his judicial custody.
Over a month later, Vijay met with the victims’ families at a resort in Mamallapuram near Chennai. During the meeting, he expressed his apologies for the tragedy and for not visiting Karur immediately after the incident. He reportedly told the families, “I was guilty as I could not meet you. I couldn't think any further. Now that I've met you, I can move forward.”
