Vietnam is expecting a major diplomatic breakthrough as General Secretary and President To Lam prepares for an official visit to Thailand. Vietnamese officials believe the visit will strengthen political trust, economic cooperation and regional connectivity between the two Southeast Asian nations.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong, the relationship between Vietnam and Thailand has become one of the most dynamic and successful partnerships within ASEAN over the past five decades. He stated that both countries share common interests in maintaining regional peace, economic development and long-term stability.
A major milestone in bilateral relations came in 2025 when Vietnam and Thailand upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Officials say the move reflected a very high level of political trust and a shared commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors including trade, security, tourism and infrastructure.
Economic ties remain one of the strongest pillars of the relationship. Thailand is currently Vietnam’s largest trading partner within ASEAN, with bilateral trade expected to surpass 22 billion US dollars by 2025. Thai companies have invested heavily in Vietnam through projects linked to energy, logistics, retail, processing industries and infrastructure development.
Vietnamese officials also highlighted the growing importance of supply chain cooperation, transportation connectivity and Mekong regional development. Both countries are strategically positioned to become major economic and logistics hubs for mainland Southeast Asia as regional trade and investment continue expanding.
Security and defense cooperation between the two nations has also deepened in recent years. Authorities from both sides are working closely on issues such as cybercrime, drug trafficking, human trafficking and other cross-border security challenges that affect the region.
The visit is expected to open new opportunities in emerging sectors including digital transformation, renewable energy, green economy, innovation and industrial modernization. Leaders from both countries are also expected to discuss strengthening ASEAN cooperation and improving regional connectivity projects.
Cultural and people-to-people exchanges continue to play an important role in the partnership. Thailand is home to a large Vietnamese community and several Ho Chi Minh memorial sites that symbolize the long historical connection between the two countries. Officials believe stronger tourism and educational exchanges will further strengthen bilateral relations.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong said the upcoming visit demonstrates Vietnam’s strong commitment to ASEAN cooperation and reflects both countries’ determination to elevate their partnership to a new level in the coming years.
