Vietnam is set to achieve an unprecedented milestone in tourism this year, with projections indicating that approximately 21 million international visitors will arrive. This marks a substantial recovery for the tourism sector, which was significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the increased visitor numbers signify a resurgence of global confidence in Vietnam as a travel destination.
The nation recently commemorated the landing of its 20 millionth foreign guest with a celebratory event on Phu Quoc Island. Officials noted that this achievement illustrates how rapidly tourism has recovered. The anticipated total for 2025 is expected to surpass the previous benchmark of 18 million guests achieved in 2019.
Government statistics highlight that foreign arrivals have risen by over 19 percent from last year. Vietnam's allure includes its extensive coastline, breathtaking scenery, vibrant culture, and historical sites, establishing it as a top choice for travelers in Southeast Asia.
Despite facing multiple environmental hurdles, including severe air pollution in Hanoi and flooding caused by heavy rainfall in tourist-friendly cities like Hue, Hoi An, and Nha Trang, interest from visitors remains robust. Authorities cite affordability, diverse experiences, and enhanced travel services as key reasons why many still opt for Vietnam as their destination.
The transformation from pandemic years is evident; in 2021, stringent border controls resulted in fewer than 160,000 foreign arrivals—a record low. The current surge illustrates the tourism sector's rapid recovery following the easing of travel restrictions.
Data from the National Statistics Office reveals that China has been the foremost contributor of tourists to Vietnam in the latest 11 months, accounting for roughly one-quarter of all arrivals. Other significant markets include South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and Japan. As prospects remain bright, officials forecast sustained growth in Vietnam’s tourism sector in the years ahead.
