Taiwan has said the United States is showing a “high sense of urgency” in accelerating weapons deliveries, as the island seeks to strengthen its defenses amid increasing military pressure from China.
Taiwan’s Defence Minister Wellington Koo stated that Washington has formed a dedicated project team to address delays and speed up key arms programs. The effort comes after repeated concerns from Taipei over slow deliveries of critical defense systems.
A major focus is the long-delayed 2019 order for 66 advanced F-16V fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin. These jets feature upgraded radar, avionics, and weapons systems designed to counter modern threats, including China’s stealth aircraft capabilities.
Officials confirmed that deliveries of some systems have already begun, while production of the F-16V jets is now running at full capacity, with initial deliveries expected to start this year.
The push to expedite arms shipments reflects broader strategic priorities. The US is legally committed under its domestic framework to provide Taiwan with defensive capabilities, and recent directives have reportedly prioritized Taiwan’s orders over other international buyers.
The issue remains a key point of tension between Washington and Beijing. China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, has consistently opposed US arms sales to the island and has called for them to be halted.
As regional security concerns grow, Taiwan continues to invest in strengthening its military readiness, relying heavily on US support to maintain a balance of power in the region.
