The US Department of Labour has released a striking new ad accusing companies of abusing the H-1B visa program, directly pointing to foreign workers, particularly from India, as beneficiaries of the system. The campaign, posted on social media, claims that young Americans have had their jobs replaced by lower-paid foreign hires due to H-1B abuse.
In a post on X, the department stated, “Young Americans have had the American Dream stolen from them, as jobs have been replaced by foreign workers due to rampant abuse of the H-1B visa.” The ad credits President Donald Trump and Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer for taking action to “recapture the American Dream for the AMERICAN PEOPLE.”
The campaign coincides with the launch of Project Firewall, a department initiative aimed at auditing H-1B visa compliance. Introduced in September 2025, the project seeks to prevent corporations from replacing American workers with foreign professionals in tech, engineering, and other specialized roles. Officials have emphasized that companies abusing the H-1B program will face scrutiny, with audits designed to ensure domestic hiring is prioritized.
The 51-second video juxtaposes nostalgic 1950s footage representing the American Dream — happy families, suburban homes, and thriving workplaces — with stark modern statistics. It highlights that 72 percent of H-1B visa approvals go to Indian nationals and frames this as evidence of widespread visa misuse. The ad concludes with a call to action: “Through Project Firewall, we’re taking action to hold companies accountable for H-1B abuse and ensure they prioritize Americans in the hiring process.”
This campaign signals a renewed “America First” jobs agenda, placing focus on domestic employment, labor market nationalism, and rigorous oversight of visa programs. By combining political messaging with economic concerns, the Labour Department is emphasizing its commitment to protecting American workers and addressing perceived inequities in the H-1B system.
Experts say Project Firewall represents the Trump administration’s most aggressive approach yet to H-1B enforcement, targeting tech and engineering sectors where visa abuse has long been criticized. The initiative is expected to trigger wide-ranging audits and potential penalties for companies found violating H-1B rules.
This bold move has sparked international attention, particularly in India, highlighting tensions around foreign worker policies, U.S. hiring practices, and the future of the H-1B visa program. The Labour Department’s action underscores the administration’s goal to ensure American workers are prioritized while maintaining scrutiny on corporate hiring practices.
