A federal judge in the United States has temporarily blocked the detention and possible deportation of British anti-disinformation campaigner Imran Ahmed, offering him immediate legal relief amid a growing political and legal dispute.
Ahmed, who is the CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, lives in New York and holds US permanent residency. The action came after the Trump administration imposed visa bans on Ahmed and four European figures, accusing them of promoting online censorship and unfairly targeting American technology companies.
According to officials, the measures were justified on foreign policy grounds. However, Ahmed challenged the move in court, arguing that the threat of deportation violated his rights to free speech and due process. He also said the action would separate him from his wife and child, both of whom are US citizens.
On Thursday, US District Judge Vernon Broderick issued a temporary restraining order preventing authorities from arresting, detaining, or transferring Ahmed until his case is properly heard. The court has scheduled a hearing between both parties for December 29.
The visa restrictions have triggered criticism from European leaders, who argue that online monitoring and regulation help reduce harmful content, including hate speech, misinformation, and child exploitation. They say such efforts make the internet safer rather than limiting free expression.
In a statement following the ruling, Ahmed welcomed the court’s decision and praised the US legal system. He said he remains committed to protecting children online and combating antisemitism, adding that he would not be pressured into abandoning his work.
US officials maintain that the government has broad authority over immigration matters and is not obligated to allow foreign nationals to reside in the country. The Department of Homeland Security has yet to comment on the ruling.
The case adds to a series of recent legal challenges involving immigration enforcement and the rights of permanent residents, with courts increasingly stepping in to review government actions.
