US forces carried out a secret raid on a ship travelling from China to Iran in the Indian Ocean last month, seizing military-related cargo believed to be linked to Iran’s conventional weapons programme. According to officials familiar with the operation, the intercepted shipment was later destroyed after being removed from the vessel.
The operation was conducted by a US special operations team, which boarded the ship several hundred miles off the coast of Sri Lanka. The raid was carried out quietly in international waters, highlighting growing concerns over weapons-related shipments moving toward Iran through maritime routes.
Officials said the cargo contained components that could potentially be used in Iran’s conventional weapons systems. While details about the exact nature of the seized items were not disclosed, authorities confirmed that the materials were considered sensitive and posed a security concern. After the seizure, the shipment was destroyed to prevent it from reaching its intended destination.
Following the operation, the ship was allowed to continue its journey after US forces completed the inspection and removal of the cargo. No injuries were reported during the raid, and there was no immediate public response from either China or Iran regarding the incident.
The raid reflects continued efforts by the United States to monitor and disrupt the transfer of military-related materials to Iran, particularly amid heightened tensions in the region. US officials have repeatedly expressed concerns about Iran’s weapons capabilities and the supply networks supporting them.
The Indian Ocean remains a key strategic route for global shipping, and the interception underscores the role of US naval and special operations forces in enforcing international security measures. The incident adds to ongoing scrutiny over maritime shipments linked to Iran and signals closer surveillance of routes connecting East Asia and the Middle East.
