Former President Donald Trump is expected to be involved in the imminent peace negotiations with Iran set to take place in Islamabad this week. A Reuters report suggests he may join either in person or virtually, contingent on a conclusive agreement.
Sources in Pakistan have confirmed that the necessary preparations are finalized, with discussions slated to kick off on Wednesday. This follows the approaching expiration of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, with Trump suggesting that an extension appears unlikely.
Initially, there were fears that Iran might forgo participation following the US’s seizure of an Iranian-flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz. However, a high-ranking Iranian official mentioned that Tehran is currently “positively reviewing” its involvement, though a final decision remains pending.
Both nations seem inclined to progress, albeit significant issues still need resolution. Trump aims to secure an accord that curtails further inflation of global oil prices and mitigates threats to financial markets. He has firmly stated that Iran must abandon any nuclear weapons development.
Conversely, Iran intends to leverage its strategic dominance over the Strait of Hormuz to negotiate sanction relief, while also seeking to avert renewed conflict, continuing its nuclear program with minimal constraints.
Tensions linger, with Trump cautioning that the US may target vital Iranian infrastructure should negotiations falter. Iran has responded by warning that it would retaliate with strikes on power and water facilities in neighboring Gulf states if provoked.
Pakistan is also playing a pivotal role in this diplomatic endeavor, with approximately 20,000 security personnel dispatched to Islamabad to ensure peace during the talks. Additionally, US Vice President JD Vance is expected to arrive in Pakistan to partake in the discussions.
While the outcome remains uncertain, the focus now turns to whether the US and Iran can establish a milestone agreement.
