United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned Israel’s recent decision to cut off electricity and water supplies to facilities operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This move, confirmed by a UN spokesperson on Wednesday, is expected to severely disrupt the agency’s operations and hinder its ability to provide critical aid and services to Palestinian refugees.
UNRWA plays a vital role in supporting millions of Palestinian refugees across the region by providing essential services such as education, healthcare, and emergency relief. The agency’s work depends heavily on the uninterrupted supply of utilities like water and electricity to run its schools, clinics, and other facilities. The cutting off of these basic services threatens to halt many of these programs, potentially worsening humanitarian conditions for vulnerable populations.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for Secretary-General Guterres, underlined that the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations remains fully applicable to UNRWA, its property, assets, officials, and personnel. He stressed that the agency’s properties are inviolable and must be protected under international law.
“The Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations remains applicable to UNRWA, its property and assets, and to its officials and other personnel. Property used by UNRWA is inviolable,” Dujarric said. He added that UNRWA is an integral part of the United Nations and essential for providing humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees.
The UN’s condemnation highlights concerns that Israel’s actions could escalate tensions and undermine ongoing efforts to address the complex humanitarian situation in the region. By restricting access to essential utilities, the move may not only obstruct relief efforts but also contribute to increased suffering among displaced Palestinian communities who depend heavily on UNRWA’s support.
As the geopolitical situation in the region remains fragile, international observers and humanitarian organizations have called for respect of international laws and agreements that protect UN agencies and their operations. The UN continues to urge all parties to uphold their responsibilities and avoid actions that could jeopardize humanitarian aid and peace efforts.
This development adds to the ongoing challenges faced by UNRWA, which has often struggled with funding shortages and political pressures while trying to maintain vital services for millions of Palestinian refugees. The cutting of utilities represents a significant new obstacle for the agency and raises urgent questions about the future of its work in the region.
